A good cap is made to last for years. With a little care now and then, it keeps its shape, its colour and its character, and stays a cap worth reaching for. Here is everything you need to look after yours.
Most of the time, your cap just needs a light going-over. Brush it gently now and then to lift off dust and lint, working in the direction of the fabric. If you catch a small mark, dab it with a damp cloth rather than rubbing it in. A soft cap brush makes this quick and keeps the fabric looking fresh.
Caps and weather go hand in hand, so a soaking now and then is nothing to worry about. When you get home, blot off the excess water with a towel, gently push the cap back into shape, and let it dry on its own at room temperature. Keep it away from radiators, heaters and direct sun, as too much heat can shrink or stiffen the fabric.
A cap holds its best shape when it is stored well. Avoid stuffing it in a pocket or under a pile of coats, where it can flatten or crease. When you are not wearing it, rest it on a shelf or, better still, on a cap holder that keeps the crown and brim in their proper form between wears.
